Barry’s Guide to Business Japanese!
Dont’s
- Don’t stand with your hands in your pockets (it’s creepy).
- Don’t put business cards immediately in your wallet! Don’t flick, throw them… or write on them.
- Don’t drink everything they pour at you! They will try test your alcohol tolerance! Sake/shouchu > jenever!
- Don’t blow your nose in front of people (unhygienic).
- Don’t ask personal questions!
Do’s
- Put business cards in front of you on the table that you have just received (keeps track of people)
- Keep the chat to business related topics such as Barry used to work in Tokyo(Fujitsu) / I cant wait to try (proper) Japanese food. Anything random, funny and amazing.
- Do nod your head, say “yeah, hmm yeah” – while people are talking to you. It acknowledges you are listening.
– Youll have to gauge how westernized they are to decide whether to shake hands or not. The more westernized the more ok they will be with shaking hands. When in doubt, (small) bow and/or wait for them to offer their hand.

The geeky things in life
Not wanting to get out of bed to shutdown your desktop can be a pain…
Luckily I thought of a way of doing it remotely! One problem, Windows 7 Home Premuim doesnt have a RDP server running.
After some googling I got this and it worked in 5 mins, I now have remote access to my Desktop now.
Next, shutdown. Well thats pretty simple with the ’shutdown’ from the command terminal. Easy peasy…..
